Even before the storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, Donald Trump’s longtime confidante, Roger Stone, had created a dangerous new template for American politics, combining information warfare with physical intimidation. The Proud Boys, an extremist group founded by one of Stone’s friends in September 2016, were a key element of this template. Five Proud Boys leaders have since been indicted on sedition conspiracy charges relating to the insurrection.

Three of them — Joe Biggs, Enrique Tarrio, and Ethan Nordean — are featured in this piece. According to a confidential informant who spoke with the January 6 Committee, some members of the organization would have killed Vice President Mike Pence, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and others lawmakers if given the chance.

This is part 3 of a series investigating the activities of Roger Stone and his network of miscreants from 2016 through the insurrection. Here are part 1 and part 2.

January — February 2019
